Summit scholarships available

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Students and young adults between the ages of 17 to 25 may apply to receive financial assistance to attend the Pennsylvania Dairy Summit on Feb. 12-13 at the Penn Stater Conference Center in State College. A special pre-conference reception for young entrepreneurs will also be held the evening of February 11. The scholarships are being made available by the Pennsylvania Dairymen’s Association and the Center for Dairy Excellence.

Considered the premier dairy event in Pennsylvania, the Summit is moving to a new venue in 2014, offering four distinct program tracks to provide cutting edge information for today’s dairy managers and agribusiness leaders. A “Young Entrepreneur’s Track” looks at dairy technology and innovation to prepare the next generation of dairy owners and managers to lead Pennsylvania’s dairy industry into the future.

“Attending the Summit is an excellent way for our industry’s young people to gain insight into the opportunities that exist in today’s dairy industry,” says Emily Yeiser, dairy initiatives manager of the Center for Dairy Excellence. “It’s also a great opportunity to meet other dairy producers and industry professionals passionate about the future of Pennsylvania’s dairy industry.”

Young adults qualifying for the scholarship will only need to pay $25 to register for the summit. Applicants must operate or be employed on a dairy farm, or be enrolled in an agricultural degree program at a college or trade school.

Scholarships are also available to offset hotel costs on a first-come, first-serve basis only. Up to 25 hotel scholarships are available for Dairy Leader Scholarship winners. Each hotel scholarship has a maximum value of $115 per night, and may be used only on February 11 and/or 12, 2014.

The Pennsylvania Dairy Summit is hosted jointly by the Center for Dairy Excellence and the Professional Dairy Managers of Pennsylvania (PDMP). Supporting partners are the Penn State Extension Dairy Team and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.

The scholarship application deadline is January 17 and applications must be sent to Melissa Anderson, Center for Dairy Excellence, 2301 North Cameron Street, Harrisburg, Pa. 17110. Applications can be faxed to the Center at 717-705-2342 or e-mailed to manderson@centerfordairyexcellence.org.

Successful scholarship applicants will be notified by January 31. Scholarship applications and complete conference information are available at www.padairysummit.org.
