Deadline is Jan. 15
Harrisburg, Pa. -- January 15 is the deadline for both farms and students to apply to participate in the 2014 On-Farm Internship program. Both dairy farm families interested in hosting an intern and students interested in the internship opportunity are encouraged to apply for the program offered by the Center for Dairy Excellence, Professional Dairy Managers of Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania Dairymen’s Association.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for college-aged students to gain insight into herd management, dairy production and other key areas of a dairy business by working on a progressive dairy farm,” said Emily Yeiser, dairy initiatives manager for the center who coordinates the program. “The students who have participated in the past have benefited tremendously from the first-hand experience they received during the internship.”
Both farms and students are asked to apply for the program, which includes up to $2000 in grant funding to students who participate in on-farm internships with participating farms. The program offsets the cost of the 10-12 week internship, providing farms with highly skilled interns interested in dairy production and offering the students an internship competitive with those offered by allied industries.
Prospective interns must be students attending a Pennsylvania university, a Pennsylvania resident attending an out-of-state school, a recently-graduated Pennsylvania resident or a student affiliated with a PDMP member farm with an interest in dairy production.
Participating farms may be located within or outside of Pennsylvania. Producers are encouraged to expose their intern to all aspects of a successful, progressive dairy operation to guide the students’ eventual return to dairy production.
Intern applicants will be matched with interested farms by a committee comprised of individuals representing the three organizations. Farms will be provided with the final approval regarding their intern for the summer. All applications should be submitted to the Center for Dairy Excellence by January 15. Those accepted will be notified by February 15 regarding their involvement.
