CLEAR BROOK, Va. -- When news emerged of Patricia Stile’s (Waverly Jerseys) heroic walk through her home engulfed in flames to carry granddaughter Reese Burdette, daughter of Justin and Claire Burdette (Windy Knoll View Holsteins), to safety… the emotion of fellow dairy farm families was palpable in the words of encouragement and faith as well as prayers for healing to be found throughout the pages of Facebook on Tuesday.
The May 26 accidental fire sent both Stiles of Clear Brook, Va. and Burdette of Mercersburg, Pa. to separate hospitals where they are fighting for their lives. Young Reese Burdette is at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, and her grandmother Patricia Stiles is at Washington Medical, in D.C.
Both are in critical condition having suffered severe smoke inhalation in addition to burns requiring skin grafts.
On Tuesday evening, an update about Reese was posted by her father Justin Burdette at the Pennsylvania Holstein Association Facebook page, as follows:
“Claire and I want to thank all our friends and family from close at home to around the world for all the positive thoughts and prayers you have given for us and Reese during the last two days. At 5:00 this afternoon, Reese got out of another surgery with very promising results that they will soon be able to start the process of actual skin grafts. We also received great news that she may be taken off the ventilator in the next 24 hours as she has shown terrific progress in her lungs! That is a very phenomenal feat at this stage. She is stronger than we could ever be and definitely a fighter! We are so overwhelmed with everyone's heartfelt concerns and prayers and just wanted to take a minute to update everyone.”
On Tuesday evening, Laura Jackson posted an update on Patricia, her mother, indicating she is “holding her own.” Her lungs need to improve before surgery for her deepest burns can occur. She said the family appreciates the prayers and messages of encouragement.
A fund has been set up at “GiveForward Inc.” and as of Wednesday, May 28, over $6000 had been raised to help with costs not covered for care as well as gas and food for family members traveling to and from the two hospitals where grandmother and granddaughter have a long mountain to climb.
